i sanded and polished my frets yesterday and they're wonderful! But, i got a bit of metal dust on my nut and now it looks a bit smearead/dirty. how do you clean a non-bone nut?

It should come off with a good rub of a microfibre towel. If not you can always use some very fine sandpaper. Just be careful to not accidentally sand the finish of the neck of headstock.
