Is it preferable to use TAB or notation for teaching young children?
For beginner players aged 7 and 8 would you strum and pluck with thumb only with right hand?
Finally how best is it to move higher up the fret board when playing melodies ?

It'll be the same as viola but with frets. For any phrases/sections of notes get them to use their index finger on whichever note is on the lowest fret. It allows them to reach upo naturally and find the next few frets with their second, third and fourth fingers.
