Join me live for a shopping-themed Kanikapila on Monday 3rd August at 6pm UK time!

This week we’ll be learning two brilliant songs from two of Britain’s greatest bands:

Lost in the Supermarket – The Clash,Shoplifters of the World Unite – The Smiths

As well as learning the chords, rhythms and structure of both songs, we’ll take a closer look at some of the musical details that make them so distinctive. For Lost in the Supermarket, we’ll learn the wonderfully catchy guitar riff using ukulele TAB and explore how it fits around the chords. For Shoplifters of the World Unite, we’ll use the song as a starting point for improvisation and discover how several different scales can be used to create contrasting sounds over the same chord progression.

We’ll also uncover some fascinating stories behind the songs, including why Joe Strummer wrote Lost in the Supermarket for Mick Jones to sing, how its drum groove was inspired, and what Morrissey claimed the phrase “shoplifters of the world” was really supposed to mean.
