On Motivation

Seem to be on that plateau Karen talks about. but keep watching Matt's zooms, and keep going over the course. I don't seem to be getting anywhere - but that is my fault. Life keeps intervening - I practice then my nails break and arthritis comes between me and the chords. But I just so love this course - Matt and the zooms I watch plus FaceBook page really is inspiring. Fighting on and upwards. I think my fingers are beginning to respond to my orders from my brain. When I watch the zooms showing other participants and how they play - it is inspiring. Thank-you all you gifted ukulele players.

I have attempted to grow and shape my nails in the past especially when I played classical guitar. It’s more or less essential for the classical style. However since learning this wonderful instrument we all know and love as the ukulele I have always played mostly with my pads. Just seemed natural when I picked up a ukulele to play just under two years ago now. I use my thumb most of the time and having now to learn a way of playing without my M finger after yesterday’s excellent workshop with Matt I am aiming to team up both thumb and index together.

With the daily ups and downs of playing and more than often my internal sat nav having to recalculate after I end up at ‘destination plateau’….must get round to leaving a review on trip advisor..and using as a basis Matt’s brilliant worksheets from yesterday, I think I have hit on an idea that may help me maintain my focus in my bite size ‘ Practice Without Practicing’ sessions.

Just simply for me because I much prefer writing longhand than using printed sheets I will copy them onto A4 single sheets ….recollect there was eight?….and place a new one on my music stand each morning. That will be my day’s practice along with playing through pieces I am currently learning. I easily get distracted and just keep returning to stuff I feel comfortable with instead of pushing myself to explore other areas. Result….I end up at Plateau City and like my fellow residents you can see me wandering around, Uke tightly held to my chest a dazed look on my face muttering to myself “where do I go next…think I missed the bypass”.

Viewing this in a light hearted way I think it will help me put Plateau City in the place it deserves to be….bottom of the Conference Football League….sorry to all those supporters of teams languishing in this position.

Cheers everyone

Anthony
